The Day I Left My Laptop in a Cafe and Thought I Was an Idiot
I needed to pee. Bad. But my laptop was on the table. My phone, too. In my home city, leaving that stuff for 3 minutes = gone. So I did that awkward dance. Pack everything? Ask a stranger to watch it?
I looked around. The guy next to me had his laptop open, bag on the chair. But he was at the counter. No one was at his table. His stuff was just... there.
I panicked. I picked up my laptop. Then I put it down. Then I picked it up again. The staff member at the counter was watching me. I swear she thought I was stealing my own laptop.
Finally I just left it. Ran to the bathroom. Came back in 2 minutes. It was still there. Untouched. I felt like the biggest idiot in the world for stressing about it.
Everyone Was Doing It But I Didn’t Get the Memo
I started looking around after that. Like, really looking.
Every single table had stuff on it. Jackets on chairs. Phones face-up. Laptops open. People would get up, order coffee, talk to friends, and just walk away from their things.
Nobody was looking around nervously. Nobody was doing that “quick glance back” thing I do. They just... trusted it?
I still didn’t. I started putting my old, busted headphones on the table first. Like a test. When those didn’t disappear, I upgraded to my notebook. Baby steps. I’m still not brave enough to leave my phone. Maybe next year.
The Windows Made Me Even More Confused
The cafe was huge. And bright. All glass windows. You could see the whole street. The whole street could see you.
At home, cafes are dark. Cozy. Hidden corners. Here it felt like I was doing work in a fishbowl. At first I hated it. Felt exposed.
But then I realized... maybe that’s the point? I don’t know. I’m not a sociologist. I just know that after sitting there for 3 hours, I stopped hugging my bag to my chest.
I still don’t fully get it. But I stopped packing my whole life every time I need a refill. That’s progress, I gues
Summary
I thought leaving my laptop was stupid. Turns out, I was the weird one for grabbing it.
I still don’t know why it works. Maybe it’s the windows. Maybe it’s magic. Maybe everyone is just nicer here. I have no idea.
📌 Things I Noticed
- People leave stuff: Laptops, bags, everything. I copied them. Slowly.
- I felt judged for packing up: The staff looked at me like “where are you going with that?” when I just needed the bathroom.
- If you’re new: Do what everyone else does. But maybe start with a pen before you test it with your laptop. I’m still not 100% brave.
This is just what happened to me. I don’t know if it’s safe. I’m not a safety expert. Don’t blame me if your stuff goes missing. I still double-check.
