There's a particular kind of quiet that comes with driving through Korean countryside at the right time of year. I remember one October morning on a mountain pass in Gangwon Province — fog still sitting in the valleys below, the road almost completely empty, the trees turning every shade between yellow and deep red. 1. Inje to Sokcho — The Misireyong Pass


This is one of the most dramatic mountain drives in Korea. The road climbs through the Taebaek range, with views that open suddenly and unexpectedly — steep ridgelines, forested valleys, and on clear days, distant glimpses of the East Sea.


Best time is autumn for foliage, or early spring before the crowds arrive. 


Distance is approximately 45km from Inje to Sokcho via the pass, with around one hour of driving without stops.

2. Boseong Green Tea Fields Road — South Jeolla Province

Driving through Boseong in the early morning, with rows of green tea covering the hillsides in every direction, is one of those experiences that feels almost cinematic. The roads here are narrow and peaceful, winding between fields that seem to go on forever.

Best time is May to June during peak green season, or after early morning rain for atmosphere. The scenic loop around the plantation area covers approximately 20 to 30km.


3. Namhae Coastal Road — South Gyeongsang Province



The Namhae Coastal Drive follows Korea's southern coastline through an area often compared to the Mediterranean — small fishing villages, terraced rice fields climbing the hillsides, and sea views around nearly every bend.


Best time is spring during cherry blossom season or late summer. The full coastal loop covers approximately 80km.

4. Juwangsan Mountain Road — North Gyeongsang Province

Less visited than the more famous national parks, Juwangsan offers dramatic volcanic rock formations and forest roads that feel genuinely off the beaten track. The drive into the park itself is part of the experience.

Best time is autumn, when the rocky peaks contrast sharply with the turning foliage. Distance is approximately 30km from Cheongsong town to the park entrance and back.


5. Bijarim Forest Road — Jeju Island



On Jeju, the Bijarim Road cuts through one of Korea's oldest and densest torreya forests. The canopy is thick enough that even on a bright day the road sits in cool green shadow. It's a short drive but a deeply atmospheric one.


This route works year-round — the evergreen forest makes it one of the few scenic drives that holds up in any season. The forest road is approximately 2km and best experienced at low speed.
